My Hiking Holiday in Andalucia!

This Hiking Holiday In Andalucia was in a beautiful mountainous area in Southern Spain. We stayed in a “white mountain village” called Competa, in the Tejeda National Park, only an hour drive from Malaga airport. This area was fantastic for hiking in the Sierras Tejada and Almijarra with spectacular scenery and views. On a clear day we could see right down to the sea and to the shores of Morocco.
Hikes took us through groves of olives, oranges, lemons, avocados, almonds and the muscatel grape, used to produce the famous Competa wine. We were fascinated by butterflies which were taking pollen from the numerous types of wild flowers. The area was lush and green. There was an irrigation system which channelled water to the lower terraces, where villagers grew vegetables. To this day, mules are still used to haul produce and wood for the fires. The lifestyle there was very peaceful and relaxing.
Many of the houses in Competa were built by the Moors and the architecture remains Moorish as it does in a lot of the nearby villages. Competa has a charming Plaza with the main features being the 16th Century church, the civic market and wine museum. All through the year there are many fiestas held in the village with flamenco music and dancing. The locals were warm and friendly and we stayed in a typical village house. We had our evening meals in a few of the many local restaurants, all of which served terrific cuisine.
This week long hiking holiday consisted of 5 days of day hikes, each taking around 4 to 6 hours to complete. The line-up of hikes included local villages, travelling along mule tracks and traditional routes on which we spotted some exotic wild flowers, birds and butterflies. We were in a small friendly group of hikers which enabled everyone to get to know each other.
We also had a day off hiking to do as we pleased. We could have done some horse riding, or we could have taken an excursion to Granada, or to Nerja on the coast, just 12 miles away. Then there was also the option of a trip to Granada. However, we decided to just relax and walk around the village at a leisurely pace.
